I’m in Nepalgunj, on the way to Mugu for a week or so (after one more flight and an overnight walk I’ll be there). To pass the time today, I joined my friend Ram Nath who was shopping for carpet to deck out his rooms. After he purchased the carpet he wanted, the salesman rolled it up and tied it round at both ends.

“Tie it in the middle also,” Ram Nath told him.

“It doesn’t really need it.”

“It will hold together better if you tie it in the middle also.”

“But if I tie it three times, it will be like the binding of a corpse. It only needs two.”

We loaded the twice-tied carpet onto the roof of the tempo and went on our way.
